LUCAYAN DUHO -The Lucayans lived in The Bahamas for many peaceful centuries until Columbus’
arrival to the islands destroyed their way of life. Lucayan artifacts such as the wooden “duho” tell the story of a spiritual and advanced people. Historians say the duho is a large, reclining Chieftain’s seat. Decorated with carved symbols and made in various shapes/sizes, these seats have been found in caves in The Bahamas and may have been used in funeral ceremonies and/or as birthing stools.
Our stoneware duhos are hand-built sculptural pieces and also make great candle holders and soap dishes.

THE REALM OF ANIMALS -Lucayans lived in harmony with nature, decorating their wares with faces of birds and other animals to represent their beliefs. The owl, for instance was the mysterious herald of dreams and visions. The hummingbird represented wisdom and experience. The parrot was a guardian symbol for spiritual guides.

Pottery making was essential to the Lucayan way of life. Early Bahamian pottery was made with red loam mixed with bits of conch shells and sand, rolled into coils, shaped into vessels and fired in open hearths.
